Designing an Employee-focused Organization

Global MNCs and firms sit tight and wait to see whether they’ve been chosen as the employee-centric firm every year or not. Just to put a stop to the wait, DHL Express was recently rated as the best workplace in 2022

Many firms today work on becoming employee-focused due to the growth and sustainability this term gives to them. Let’s dig deeper into this blog.

What’s “For the People?”

Top Silicon Valley leaders, notably Reed Hastings and Marc Benioff, fostered people-first culture and turned their organizations around by connecting with every worker and appreciating their input. Their actions are a testament to the fact that developing employee-focused culture results in the workforce feeling valued. Empathetic leaders know that revenue alone does not fulfill the average employee’s sense of purpose, and building a company focused on the person requires doing more. Thus, it is imperative to build a culture focused on the “people” as it helps an employee get positive and empowered experiences. When employees are treated like they are valued, committed, and engaged in an organization, they tend to engage in positive and effective communications with their stakeholders. As a result of the engagement, their objective turns out to be “customer-first,” making them empowered to respond to customer concerns, following the culture of their organization that values people.

What Can Be Done?

The road to an employee-centric workplace is a challenging one. Leaders and their management go above and beyond to pull up the best practices that can help foster an employee-centric culture a couple of years down the road. My approach to building a firm involved creating a solid strategy and executing it empathetically. To get a better sense of where one is today, frequent pulse surveys and one-on-ones are the best ways to test the waters. When management is aware of the current situation, they can devise better plans, such as developing employee-centric core values.

Employee-centric workplaces cultivate a culture of learning through employees’ jobs so that they do not feel stagnant just because they have to log in every day. Continual learning stimulates employees’ interest in their domain and helps them upskill. Thus, it keeps a workforce agile, focused, and driven. Firms that invest enough in their people development eventually meet with low turnover, high employee satisfaction, and the ability to compete against more innovative competitors.

More on Continuous Learning:

An ideal workforce desires to be challenged, constantly seek improvements, and strive for continuous learning. I take a very strong stance on enabling mobile learning for employees through LMS (learning management system). An LMS installed with resources in a phone is accessible and is an effective tool at the disposal. Critical information delivered in bite-sized relevant bursts can drastically improve, help employees flag their problems, and help them seek clarity for their profile. When employees get an intimate knowledge of their domain and the company’s customers, they become supportive of the company’s goal to provide a richer customer experience. In this sense, employee-centric companies become “people-centric” companies, where employees are motivated to work harder. Some key elements of employee-centric companies include a good relationship with the manager, having the proper tools for the job, and having the authority and freedom to make decisions about the work.

By placing employees at the forefront, listening to them, rewarding their efforts, and helping them get involved, a company can become more worker-driven, enhancing overall success.

Take this Home

An employee-centric company succeeds at telling the story of its thriving and sustainable work environment – thereby creating goodwill in the market. In exploring one of the pillars of its resilience, one can find that every wall and space has been designed for employee comfort. Firms know that “people are the center of everything,” meaning that this is a world where people matter and their needs come first.

In essence, only when you become employee-focused, you can pull off becoming a people-centric firm, delivering the best experience to customers, workforces, and society.
