How do you define a leader? Will you call the person sitting in the CEO’s chair or the one who owns the company a leader?
Truth be told, leadership is more than simply having a designation. True leaders equip others with a shared vision and the right direction to maximize the success of the firm. You may see them breaking down all the barriers and preparing for all the uncertainties of the future. But most importantly, a leader focuses on developing people and constructing a healthy environment in an organization. They are “people-oriented.” In order to become a truly effective leader, one needs to possess certain skills and characteristics.
I decided to write this article about leadership training as it has been on my mind for several weeks now. Seeing C-suit and managers striving to become desirable leaders today, I thought of sharing my views.
Let’s begin by understanding the dynamics that work against the leaders and how leadership training can help!
What Seeds the Need for Training?
Leaders don’t have to be perfect and flawless. As the person on whom a firm depends, the stakes remain high as they drive the company. This is particularly true when the organization is small and the leader juggles multiple hats. In trying to balance laying out profitable plans and making long-term strategic goals, they often miss out on a key aspect – communication with their employees. It’s no surprise that employees would expect their leaders to understand their queries, listen to their opinions, or resolve conflicts – in other words, to be good listeners. Unfortunately and unknowingly, leaders of the future are so swamped in the daily activities that they miss out on demonstrating empathy and end up losing the chance to converse. The miss creates a gap between a leader and the members. Employees remain unaware of the goals and become directionless. As a result, the overall culture of the organization gets a dent.
What Does Leadership Training Entail?
I believe in the quote “leaders are made, not born” and encourage CEOs and leaders to adopt the same view. Leadership can be learned through training, experience, and time for the purpose of inculcating inclusivity in an organization. There is a wide array of leadership training courses that can help leaders to equip themselves to become competent in any situation, sharpen their leadership techniques, and identify their own strengths. These training programs help leaders develop a mindset that plays a key role in influencing behavior, thinking, and communication. The programs include specialized modules to refine communication skills and help a person gain confidence in public speaking and striking assertive communication.
Leadership training is generally broken down into a set of modules where the major emphasis is on understanding organizational behavior with human psychology. Behaviors are taught to help leaders understand the thinking of individuals around them and develop empathy. Through simulation, leaders are put under various situations that would bring the best of their logical thinking and analytical reasoning.
Here are some of the benefits!
What does a Company Stand to Gain with Leadership Training?
The popularity of leadership programs has spiked to such an extent that companies invest more than $370 billion globally in it. Through the skills acquired in the training, you, as a leader, can cultivate a “positive culture” over time. In my days as a sophomore, the very first benefit I fetched through training was developing people skills. It is the ability to socialize effectively, demonstrate empathy, and resolve conflicts constructively.
When leaders begin to understand their employees, they feel respected and valued. Furthermore, a sense of responsibility evokes in the employees to reciprocate the leader’s trust by being productive in their work which in turn welcomes inclusivity in the environment of the firm. They understand the vision their leader wants to communicate, get aligned with it, and tend to stay longer in the firm, as a result, the retention rate shoots up by 92%!
