The art of making the right decision against all odds

Your decisions define you. A human is perpetually involved in the process of making decisions – voluntarily or involuntarily.

Should I wake up at 5 am and hit the gym, or should I sleep in a little longer? Should I wear a blue or a white shirt to the office today? Should I make an average presentation for the meeting, or should I make a presentation to the best of my ability?

There is always a choice to make. But what differentiates mediocrity from excellence is the Right decisions.

Especially in the workplace, making the right decision holds a lot of value. One wrong decision can cost time, money, and resources, while the right decision can take a company from a startup to a unicorn.

As a rule of thumb, I hire people who are good decision-makers. Now, a good decision is not only about being right. It is about being ethical and right in a universal sense.

There are three reasons why I hire the Right decision-makers:

Trustworthy

A professional relationship demands trust. You cannot run a business while doubting the moral standards of your employee. And having a team of trustworthy people working under you is priceless. They take away the worry of being taken for granted or cheated.

Accountable

In my opinion, accountability from employees is the elementary requirement. Arriving on time at the office, performing required duties, following rules of the workplace are requisites. At the same time, coming across an employee with a high sense of accountability is rare. So, I make it a point to focus on fundamental qualities rather than skills.

Self-motivated

Nobody wants to work with people who need constant reminders and hand-holding. Ethical people understand their responsibilities and are committed to them.

But how do you make sure that you always end up making the Right decision? Making the right decision is an art.

Analyze the Decision Ethically

Does your company have rules against sharing certain information with the public? Is meeting clients outside the office a breach of company policy? Think before you make a decision. Analyze if your action is in any way unethical. Every day you are forced to make multiple decisions at the workplace. Hence it is necessary to train your thought process so that you can easily detect ethical loopholes.

Conduct Thorough Research

Be quick but do not rush. At times you need to know facts before you can make the right decision. A matter that superficially looks perfectly fine can give negative results in the long run. Take your time to think through and even probably discuss with trusted colleagues. Do not be shortsighted and jump to conclusions.

Detach Emotions

Wrong decisions are based on emotions, and the right ones are based on principles. If you feel that you are getting emotional while making a decision, then wait it out. Either assign the task to someone else to give yourself time to emotionally detach yourself from the matter at hand.

Making a morally right decision is not difficult – you always know right from wrong. What makes it tough is taking the right decision irrespective of whatever is at stake. The right decision has no alternatives. And In order to make the right decision, you have to stand up for what you believe in.
