Fear: The advantages of being scared

Don’t let the fear of what could happen make nothing happen. Starting your venture will allow you to come across people from diverse backgrounds. Every time I visit Ergode I get to observe my fellow Ergodians. Every one of them is quite unique and amazing. But one of the most common things that I feel is holding them back is fear. Most of us crave for excitement and challenge at work that will keep us motivated. But when we are entrusted with challenges we are somehow terrified. When we are given certain responsibilities we worry that we will be punished and try to avoid those tasks in the process. If we keep allowing fear to get in the way of our daily life we will be left behind. Even I was terrified of failure during the early days of Ergode. But I somehow managed to use fear as fuel for my success. Fear is good. It will keep you on your toes. It will keep you alert and in the process avoid as many mistakes as possible. Let me show you a few tips on how to conquer fear.

Analyze the feeling

Break down the feeling of fear. Find the reason behind it. Think of solutions to overcome it. It could be that you are stressed out for a big presentation. This feeling will only allow you to do a better job. The relief that you will find at the end of it is priceless.

Normalize the experience

I can assure you that everyone is afraid of something at work. Maybe it could be your colleague or your boss. Being aware of this will help you reduce the intensity of the feeling. Sometimes thinking about the worst can also help you tame fear. Think about the repercussions of not delivering the task on time or messing up the client presentation. Thinking about the worst might help you as it has already allowed you to expect the worst. Let me quell your fears about speaking in front of a room full of influential people. Even I am scared sometimes when I have to address a crowded room. But doing it on a daily basis makes it easier for me to speak publicly. It is normal to feel some butterflies in the stomach.

Recall previous experiences

Every time we fear a certain incident it tends to be funny when we look back. We realize that there was no reason for such feelings to occur. Thinking about such incidents in the past can help you relax more. It will reduce the burden of facing your CEO (I promise I’m a complete chiller) or your manager. Think of the time when you first spoke in front of a class in school or the time when you went bungee jumping. This should help you calm your nerves.

It is sometimes impossible to take away those feelings completely. But you can always use them to your advantage. Fear can be an amazing weapon in your arsenal. So, next time you feel that you will be drowned in fear, think about how efficient you can be because of this feeling. After-all, feeling fear is better than not feeling anything at all!
