Every employee works hard to earn that well-deserved promotion. With promotion comes responsibilities, title and good pay. A promotion can change an employee’s life around. The meaning of promotion refers to the action of promoting someone to a higher position or rank. But for me promotion is light at the end of the tunnel. The light symbolizes a bright future and the beginning of a new and exciting journey. Getting a promotion is not just about doing your job well. To move up the ladder you have to prove to decision-makers that you are ready to take on more responsibility. This means that you have to be at your absolute best at all times. My blog today is inspired by and dedicated to those Ergodians who got promoted just a few days back. What does it take to get a promotion? What habits do you need to form to take that next big step in your career? Allow me to help you.
Set goals
Setting and achieving goals is one of the most effective ways to showcase your abilities. Setting goals will show your reporting manager that you are focused on a plan. Achieving them will prove to your seniors that you’re capable. Achieving goals can give you brownie points that can prove you’re ready for a promotion.
Be a team player
No managers or team leaders like it when associates are focused on ‘I’ rather than ‘we’. They are always on the lookout for people who are committed to making the team look good. When a team performs at an optimum level the company benefits. Helping cover the shortcomings of the team will bring tons of respect to your name. This can serve as the perfect platform for your promotion. As the saying goes, there is no ‘I’ in team.
Take the lead
If you are really desperate for that promotion then this point is absolutely important. Showcase your leadership abilities even if you aren’t one. The more you act like a leader, the easier it will be for you to become one. The secret is to demonstrate the qualities of a leader without bossing people around. The difference between being bossy and being a leader depends on your quality. A true leader displays confidence, builds trust, solve issues and motivate others to do their best.
Keep learning
Continuous learning is a sign that you care about your career. You are taking the initiative to elevate your career. From taking courses to learn a specific technical skill to taking on a different type of project. There are several ways to learn. You can also work with a mentor or manager to grow and develop as an ideal employee.
Train your replacement
When you are moving up in your position don’t forget to train someone to take over your position. This way you are showing your superiors that you care about the organization and its future. You are also showcasing your leadership skills. These things come in handy in the long run.
The important thing to remember is that promotions take time. Don’t get frustrated if it takes longer than you expected. Good things happen to those who wait. All you need to do is show up to work every day and give your 100%. A heartfelt congratulations to those who got promoted. Your journey to greatness has only begun. Until next time, CHEERS!!
