How Negativity Hits Businesses and Workplace Hard

The term ‘negativity’ means the expression of criticism or pessimism about something. Negativity spreads within no time. Negativity and false criticisms will not only harm democracies, political parties, and economies but also hamper businesses in a big way. When it comes to the workplace, negativity can take on many forms including lying, slander, deceit, selfishness, and pessimism. The office should be a calm and productive place where everyone can concentrate and focus on their jobs. When a negative workplace is allowed to persist, it will affect everyone in the company. It can also derail the productivity train, causing employees to shift their focus to petty issues. There was a time when people would gather around the water cooler for their share of gossip. This has now been moved online. This enables people to hide behind screens and think less about the negative impact their words and actions might have. The best way to make negativity a thing of the past is by taking action yourself. Combating this can begin with one single person taking action. All it takes is having the courage to take a stand against negative behaviors and actions.

Avoid criticizing

One of two things can be done when we experience negative or unfavorable behavior. We can either ignore it or complain about it. These are natural reactions, yet they can have a counterproductive effect. To make an impact and become the person that enacts change, you will have to educate the people. You need to explain the ill effects of negative behavior. You can also enlighten them on transforming it into a positive thing.

Be on the lookout

Negative behavior is sometimes unintentional and can go unnoticed. In the name of humor, some individuals might make insensitive comments thinking theyre funny. Call them out on this behavior and show them the negative impact and the direct consequences of their actions. You also need to be aware of your own behavior and ensure that you are not crossing the line when reprimanding.

Speak up

Take a stand against unruly behavior and make your voice heard. You cant change anything by staying silent. If you feel uncomfortable speaking to their faces, you can speak directly to HR. Just because people have looked the other way in the past doesnt mean it has to continue. Stand up for what you believe in and work for the change.

We are living in a world surrounded by negativity. Whether it is the fire tragedy in Australia or the student attack at the JNU in India. Let us take the stance and be the flag-bearers of change and hope. All it takes is a single person to stand up and create a ripple. Is that person you?
